Gary asked me to expand on the Cognitive Restructuring theme, so here it goes . . .

Cognitive Restructuring is really disciplined thinking. We can change how we feel by choosing to think in rational ways. Though structuring our thinking isn't near as fun as ranting, screaming and carrying on, it does play a role in relaxation and eventual wellness.

Instead of saying to ourselves, "This is terrible; this is awful, I CAN'T STAMD IT!!!" we can choose to say, "SH--!, Shucks, Dog-gone-it, here it comes again. I'll start breathing now, get close to my meds and I'll get through it. I can stand it because I've made it through a bunch of these bastards. I'll make it through this one again."

Now, this does take practice -- esp. if we're use to emoting, emoting, emoting about these HAs (and whatever else negative in our lives), but it can be done. When the negative thoughts creep in, blast their way in or whatever, to get more comfortable with this negative "condition" called CH, we need to say, "STOP!" and replace the negative, "I CAN'T STAND THIS!!!" talk with the more positive, "I really, REALLY HATE this, but I can make it through and I will."

Albert Ellis developed a cognitive restructuring technique called Rational Emotive Thinking (RET) and he has a step-by-step plan to get us through the bad stuff that happens to us. I know if you go to the library or book store, you'll find lots of info. on RET and cognitive restructuring.

Okay, now you can make fun of me. I don't mind a few laughs at my expense. You are all great people! This can work for us to some extent if we want it to.

Happy Thinking!!!

Michelle C.
