Hi Kathy
ABSOLUTELY! We used to have a rottweiller and she could tell before we could that hubby was about to go into c/h. She had her headache hideaways all over the house. She hated these things. She died last year of lupus and we now have a chesapeake bay retriever pup who, after this last cycle, is beginning to understand that Dad "gets wierd" every now and then. He doesn't hide (he is much more outgoing anyways) but he does get really sad and quiet. He tries to make Dad feel better by staying close. I'm sure he will learn with time that Dad just wants to be left alone.
Perhaps c/h'ers give off a different scent when they are about to have an attack or a different aura or something. I have a friend who is epileptic and he has a dog that will guide him to safety before he seizes. This dog is especially trained for this. There must be some connection.
In support of your dog, and to offer you my experience, comfort him (the dog, I mean) as much as you can. It must be scary for them too.
Cheers
Margi
