I like your hypothesis. I do believe this is about chemistry and while your idea about running out of a particular chemical may very well be the root cause it might be the build up of a particular chemical that brings on a cycle. At any rate I have always felt that there was an allergic component to all of this. Our chemistry goes out of whack due to an allergic reaction ( the seasonal component for those who are episodic, the stuffed nose during an attack, etc., etc. ).
