will work but they are pretty much usless after you're done.
Get a "square" pointed shovel and the covering should come right up. Then you have a useful tool at the end of the job.
If you're going to use chemicals, use the glue remover that is made for the job. Using thinner is dangerous, especially if you have a pilot light in the stove.
