im short of 39 yrs old and been chronic for 25 years, i really (IMHO) think its not age but how long you've had them. i know a dude 50 (i think) that has them for 30 years and they have slowed considerably as have mine, dont know why and dont care.
as for prevention ive been on verap and lith for 11 years and every year without changing the dose they become less and less sever in frequency and intensity.
