In the article, "Hypothalamic Activation in Cluster Headache Attacks", May, Bahra, Buchel, Frackowiak, Goadsby they say,
"Our findings establish central nervous system dysfunction in the region of the hypothalamus as the primum movens in the pathophysiology of cluster headache".
This is based on "repeated" observation of hypo activation in nitro induced attacks. The area was not activated in clusterheads not in cycle nor in non clusterheads. It also was not activated when other forms of pain were induced. So they showed that it is not an area involved in the normal pain processing by the brain but is activated at the onset of CH.
They claim the hypo is causal in CH or at least is in the CH loop.
