That's what my doctor also said for my first Imitrex shot. Well, I listended to him and did it in my office. I was in the middle of an important conference call when a number 10 on the Kip scale occured. I had to hang up the phone. I had my office window completely opened (it was -20 outside!) yet I was sweating like a pig. I removed my shirt and my t-shirt was soaked. I decided it was time to take that first shot (at that time, dying seemed like a great idea).
Well I pulled down my pants and stabbed myself. I could picture the scene of someone walking in my office at that exact time (-20 degrees, all sweaty and my pants down with a seringe in my hand! Just lovely!) Anyway, 5 minutes later I was in heaven. I could feel the pain "melting away". Great stuff!
It worked for me but you should nonetheless be very cautious with the stuff. I should have at least let someone in my office know what I was about to do, just in case. But I didn't! Not too brilliant.
I wish you the best.
