It's been my regular for 20-years but you are correct about it not being effective unless--you take it at the very earliest hint of an attack. Waiting until it has developed into a clear attack is to wait too long.
Given the low cost (compared to other meds), it would be better to take it and have a false alarm than to delay. Secondly, take a second tab in 20-minutes if you are having a tough attack. Third, during an active cycle you can reduce or prevent attacks by taking two a day as a preventive med--a technique used more in Europe than here, I think. But I have found it effective, especially during the summer, when doing yard work heats up the body and regularly triggers a CH. Under those conditions, I take an Ergomar 1-2 hours before starting to work.
