has strange effects on the body sometimes. Your husband may be reacting to the trauma in some kind of self-peservation mode. He needs to recover and perahaps his body has reacted this way to allow this to take palce...
It isn't scientific and relates often to other areas of medicine but I believe it can apply here as well.
Still, keep tabs on your doctors and those who are caring for him. Ask lots of questions but be pleasant as long as they are responsive and seem to be interested in helping.
Keep us informed and I'm betting things will begin to look better soon.
