I only take Verapamil (a calcium channel blocker) during an attack. There is no bad effects when stopping the medication (no taper period like with prednisone). If you are taking a large dose (say over 240mg of Verapamil...), you may need to taper up the dose when restarting.
There is really no reason to take the medication during a remission period (unless it is also being used to treat high blood pressure), as I am not aware of any studies to show that it increases the remission time.
