Demerol (or any other painkiller, for that matter) probably won't do much to break your cycle. Maybe the pharmacist is under the impression that you're having a series of migraines?
I'm taking Bellergal-S, a particular brand of ergotamine, and it seems to be working for me. I'm still getting headaches pretty regularly, but they're nowhere near what they used to be. Ask your doctor about it. You can also read through other posts on this board to get a feel for what other people are taking, and to find a lot of non-prescription ideas (drinking several gallons of water every day or exercising every time you feel the beginning of a CH are popular suggestions, and people have reported a lot of success).
