when I was first (mis)diagnosed as having trigemenal neuralgia by a locum, my own doc being on vacation.
I took the Tegretol as prescribed and thought it worked wonders for my attacks, for they had disappeared.
But they were only in remission. Fortunately, not for me but for the right treatment, the next attack came on nine months later. I saw my own doctor this time and he told me he didn't believe it was trig. neuralgia, but that I'd better see a neuro just in case.
End of story. I have CH - and Tegretol never did anything to combat them - for me.
It is possible that you have been in a long remission. There are people on this board mentioning remissions that lasted 10 years!
