Hi,
This is my first post here. I have suffered episodic cluster headaches for 11-2 years... usually March- October, in the evenings. Sometimes none for days or weeks, some every day. I have tried Stadol NS and ergot inhalers for relief; and Sansert and Depakote/Verapamil combination as preventative.
The Sansert was most effective, but my Dr. is hesitant to prescribe it due to the possibility of the retroperitoneal fibriosis side effect.
I am currently taking 2x250mg Depakote and 2x180mg Verapamil SR... but thet are not working well.
This week I've had 4 attacks; on the "Kip Scale" a 9, two 10's, and last night I swear was a 11 or 12.
I saw the urgent care Dr. today who prescribed Imatrex 50mg tablets which I doubt will work until I see my regular Dr. Monday.
I have a couple of questions.... Considering the other things I've tried, how well does lithium or prednisone work to prevent attacks? How well does pure oxygen or Imitrex injection work to stop the pain?
My Dr. once prescribed oxygen, but the HMO insureance refused to pay... they sent a letter saying "oxygen is not medically recognized for the treatment for cluster headache". Can anybody point me to medical data (like something in JAMA or NEJM) that shows it is effective?
Thanks much for any help you can provide. And I pray none of us has a cluster attack tonight!
