Dear Ken,
A doctor need only make a statement like that once, after which he or she should no longer be your doctor. Cluster sufferers have a tough enough time dealing with family, peers and co-workers who treat the affliction with suspicion and impatience. We need at least one place we can call safe harbour, and that place should be with your physician. I hope you will find a new physician asap. My own doctor does not profess to have the answers. But I can feel more confident with him and his willingness to acknowledge the complexities of my pain, to listen to my suggestions, and to try anything medically sound. I have a feeling that there might be some doctors who allow their personal frustration in dealing with clusters to disconnect them from a functional doctor/patient relationship. It's not about their inability to find the magic pill, it's about the patients, and seeing them through the ordeal; giving them hope, the strength to go on, and the confidence in both themselves and their relationship with their physicians. It sounds as though your relationship has become one sided. I hope you'll be able to find a good doctor soon.
