In recent months I began a kinda of meditation When the pain gets too bad, I go off to my bathroom, place a hot washcloth down on the vanity and put my head down (I'm sitting down) I then basically just space out, until I'm totally relaxed. It sounds impossible, but it's worked for me, and I believe it has shortened the attack. I found that when I fight the pain, cry, rant, etc., the attack is worse and lasts much longer.
It takes concentration, but it's well worth it.
