There is little doubt that there are a lot of nasty side effects to prednisone...but there are a lot of benefits also.
If used for short term...most of the side effects won't be seen. Most patients can respond well to a steroid burst. 60-80mg for a week or two then tapered off. While at the high doses, people can have nightmares, tremors, and even confusion (may even seem like the walls are talking with you). However, there are little or no long term side effects. And if it stops a cluster dead in it's tracks...most people find that worth while (I do).
If a burst doesn't work, some people try a more constant dose (say 60mg every other day). Long term use is where you see the more significant side effects...and there can be many. It is well worth discussing with your physician the side effects, and balancing them with having the clusters. Having clusters causes a whole lot of side effects, too...including destroying your life.
Trying long term use of prednisone may be worth it...but there are a lot of different treatments available, too. It's not an easy decision which to try...and can be very confusing.
It is possible, Jonathan, that the prednisone may have been contributing to your depression...but having cluster headaches everyday certainly didn't help either. I hope you find the treatment that works best for you. Any help you need, please let me know.
