Michael,
I'm very happy for you that you can control your pain. Wish I were that lucky.
You said there was an "over abundance" of drug talk on this board. I disagree. Some of the new drugs that have been discussed (as well as a few old ones) have worked as preventatives for a lot of sufferers. Unfortunately, I'm one of the ones who hasn't hit on the "right" one yet to use as a preventative. And I don't do pain well.
In addition to trying everything known to science (plus a trip to surgery), I've also tried every alternative anyone has posted.
Now, I'm the first person to promote a drug free enviroment ( I've seen too many people think they are for recreation), but when I'm to the point of seriously considering taking a hammer and breaking my big toe to see if I can move the focus of the pain from my head - then it's time for the meds and pray that they work.
I don't think anyone is really recommending drugs - we're just saying what "works for me". After that it needs to be discussed with each person's doctor pro and con. I wish I could get rid of mine by doing knee bends or push ups (I am going to invest in a punching bag and see if that works)but so far that just doesn't work for me. When my pain gets above a 5-6, I reach for the Cafagot and O2. I don't like the feeling I get with it, but I just can't stand the pain.
This post is not meant to be patronizing or insensitive. Just wanted to get my two cents in and that's all it is MY 2 cents.
Hugs BD
