When I went in to see my regular doctor, he wasn't in, so his associate put me on 160 mg. of Verapamil plus a version of ergotamine. When my regular doc got back, he took me off the ergotamine, put me on tapered Prednisone, and raised the Verapamil to 240 mg. twice a day, plus Darvocet for shadows. By the time that I was halfway through the Prednisone, I was having only shadows, which the Darvocet controlled. I'm no longer using either Prednisone or Darvocet and I've reduced the Verapamil to 120 mg. twice a day. In my opinion, which may very well be worthless, if you don't start out by taking 240 mg. twice a day, you're not going to get any help from Verapamil. But, if you start out taking at least 480 mg. a day, it will work for you and, as the attacks get weaker, you can reduce your intake of Verapamil. A side-effect may be constipation. If that's the case, just drink prune juice.
