Propranolol is a beta blocker. I was pescribed it
in March 95, January 98 and this week!
I find that a long acting form like 'half Inderal
LA' works the best. This is a slow release that
is effective over 24 hours. Propranolol is also
ideal for combining with Amitriptylene, and anti-depressent
that can be effective at aborting the cluster.
If combined, it is preferrable to take both pills
before going to bed - this prevents the amitriptylene
from causing an irregular heartbeat.
Both drugs work best if started very early in the
cluster. Amitriptylene takes 2 weeks to start
working.
For the really bad days you can take up to four
long acting half strength propranolol capsules -
I've never required more than two (believe me, take
more than one and you feel like a geriatric!). If
multiple capsules are taken they should be space 6
hours apart.
