Sorry to hear about Mike. I know it's tough for both of you to go through this. My husband, also a Mike, is a clusterhead too.
If your hubby is med free at the moment, you may want to consider the water treatment or the alternative therapy of mushrooms - we've found success with both in the past. If, however, he is on meds at the moment, you'd be wise not to try either treatment, however.
Has he tried Oxygen as an abortive? That works really well for a lot of folks here, as well as applying ice directly to the pain. Please let us know how he is treating himself now, so we can help a little more.
