Went outside tonight to open my hose bibs to a dribble since we're predicted to hit 26F again tonight (here in FL) and I don't want the pipes to freeze.
One hose bib is near my heat pump and I noticed it (the heat pump) was running, but the fan was still and white smoke was pouring out of it. Hard to tell if it was "smoke" smoke or just the "smoke" you get when you breathe warm breath in cold air, but I think I detected a bit of a burned odor. While I watched it over a period of maybe a minute, the fan kicked in, dispersed all the smoke and all seemed fine.
The heat has been working fine inside the house and the heat pump was new in May, 2000 (installed by the previous owner). But I know he paid $3200 and I'm terrified at the thought it's dead already and I'll be hit with that same bill. Unit was warranteed for 1 year, compressor for 10.
Somebody tell me that the compressor is the problem, or I have a slipping fan belt. Anything that's either warranteed or cheap to fix.
P.S. Add me to the list of people planning to move to the USVI.
KTSSU,
