The migraine meds work by attaching to the serotoin receptor sites on the nerves and acting like serotonin. The Elavil stops the nerve that produces serotonin from taking the serotonin back to be reused. This keeps the serotonin in the synapse longer and makes more available. So the migraine drugs and Elavil basically do the same thing in different ways. The Elavil may work and won't hurt like the Imitrex. The only side you'll probably get from the Elavil will be feeling groggy.
