The caffeine helps the ergot get into your system faster. I believe caffeine being an upper, also helps constrict the blood vessels.
I've used cafergot for the past 25 years. Never had a problem falling asleep after taking it.
During this past cluster I took one tab in the afternoon, when my head felt funky, and another at bedtime to prevent the regular, 1 hour after falling asleep, headache.
The cafergot along with 360 mg / day of verapamil worked great. I also kept O2 for a backup. The cafergot worked better than the triptans did for me.
