Aspirin is, among other things, an anodyne, a pain-reliever. It is *not* an opiate.
Opiates were originally sap from the opium poppy: opium and its alkaloid derivatives eg, morphine, Dilaudid, codeine. Many opiates are now semi- or completely synthetic.
