...In 1979, when I first got attacked by clusters, I sat in the waiting room of the VA hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, until 4:00 P.M. for an 8:00 A.M. appointment. At about ten, someone wheeled a patient into the hallway and parked him. The old guy must have served in WWI, and he had no arms or legs. He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. He lay there for more than two hours. I watched him, and other than blinking, he made no sign. Finally, when I couldn't take any more of this man's patience, I went to the desk and asked why this man had been left here. The attendant nurse told me to mind my own business. I told him that this was my business. I got fairly loud, insisting that someone at least give this guy a drink of water. Some attendant came and wheeled the old guy off--who knows where. I will never go to a VA hospital again. There may be some that treat vets as human, but I'll never know. That was the day that a neuro told me I had clusters. He spent 3 minutes with me and prescribed Prednisone.
