Check with a neuro about Verap causing that monster headache. I'm not trying to challenge the ER Doc, but if Verap worked well for you at only 120-240mg, I'd sure look into it again!
As far as I know Calcium channel blockers do not specifically dilate our arteries, but rather "relax" them.
Reduction in CH may be due to the fact that calcium channel blockers keep the arteries from forcefully over-extending too much, and lower our blood pressure by keeping them from constricting too much.
