until I was on my way to work this morning. I was running late, so I was hurrying along past the junior high school that my daughter attended, years ago.
There on the front lawn were a bunch of kids and I wondered what they were doing there so early (7:10 a.m.). I looked at them, noticing their clothes and thinking 'my God, why aren't they wearing jackets! It's chilly this morning, and that kid is wearing shorts!! What the heck are they doing there so early? Kids.'
Then I realized what they were doing.
They were raising the school's flag. To half mast. They were standing in a circle around that flagpole, holding hands, heads bowed. One girl was weeping and her friend had her arm around her.
The traffic was whizzing by them, everyone caught up in their own morning rush. Probably no one but me noticed these 6 kids taking a moment to remember and pray. Not an adult in site, this was something the children did themselves.
It blew me away. That snapshot will stay with me forever.
