it just seems like lousy ammunition to fight this beast. if he doesn't understand clusters perhaps you need to inform him of how debilitating clusterheadaches are. Or get a doctor who does understand. you need something to prevent attacks from happening and something to abort the attacks until the preventatives kick in & the cycle is broken. verapamil & prednisone are effective preventatives for many, although some dislike the side effects of prednisone in particular.
imitrex injections & oxygen are two of the most succesful abortives. on the alternative side of things we have the water treatment, the shroom treatment, melatonin ect.

as for any immediate pain, i'm afraid i can't help you there. most painkillers i've tried won't even begin to touch a level 8-10 assuming they are metabolised before the attack is over. anything you can buy without a scrip is just wasting your money in my opinion.
