ER - do they help?

I'm a UK sufferer who is currently in a period of remission for which I am, of course, grateful. However during one of my last severe bouts my wife whisked me off to the ER in the middle of the night for them to virtually ignore our joint pleas for assistance. At the time I was in one of my worst attacks.

Of course there is possibly very little they can do but I was wondering how other sufferers are treated in the ER (particularly those in the US). What do/can they do? Are they sympathetic or do you also get brushed off?
