You might want to try ice instead of heat, my husband is the sufferer and he uses those gel-filled ice packs that never really quite freeze solid but he lays it right on the pain. He also uses Oxygen to abort the attack. Read everything you can lay your eyes on here, especially the buttons to the left. There are a few folks here who have had amazing success with the magic mushroom treatment(my hubby is one of them, 19 months remission!) The drug in them is psilocybin and it is appearing to abort cycles in people.
