I believe the fear of relying too heavily on Imitrex or most any medication is that one might develop rebound headaches. No one seems to know the time period and dose required to experience rebound headaches with Imitrex.
Maxalt is one of the new triptan drugs (serotonin agonists) like Imitrex. It is used for aborting an attack.
I believe Depakote is used as prophylactic. If you look on the home page there is a link to a very authoritative article which discusses many of the drugs you asked about.
