Do you know why Italians (and other latin languages) pronounce:
big -> biga
lunch -> luncha
and, more generally, we add a vowel to the last consonant?
Because we have NOT ANY word that ends with consonants! Our brain (really!) cannot instruct the tongue to stop immediately after the last letter, then add the most common vowel, an E (italian E is pronounced like your A) (excluding some consonants, like s, m and n).
Same for H ending words .... the become da
