Could they have the opposite effect? That is to say, could they cause a cycle to start prematurely?

No one knows for sure, of course, but my strong opinion is "no".

I do think it is possible that frequent ingestion at "recreational" levels over a period of years might eventually lead to a diminished response. It might take higher doses to abort the cycles, and the remissions might not last as long. I repeat that this is only speculation, but I have read enough reports of similar things happening with other preventatives that I am willing to admit it may be a possibility with shrooms as well.

Maybe we could get an answer from 3mshrooms on this subject. He has been taking shrooms for nineteen years now, both to stop his headaches and for recreation. They still work every time to stop his headaches, but perhaps his remission periods have shortened over the decades.
