I started taking 50 mg of Prednisone per day at the beginning of December last year. This dose was maintained for approximately a month to help with severe asthma that was completely out of control. The weaning period went for about another month.
In the two months that I was on the medication I gained about 25 pounds. Not bad when you consider that I was on a strict diet the whole time!!!
My doctor told me that the weight gain would reverse itself as the levels of prednisone were reduced. Boy was he wrong!
I now suffer major problems with fluid retention, I appear to be allergic to the air (must be that - we can't find any other common agent), the weight gain is continues regardless of what I do, I'm thirsty almost all of the time, and I am constantly fighting to control my emotional state.
I told my doctor the other day that if Prednisone was ever again indicated as a treatment - I would prefer to be left to die.
I am about to have some tests to find out what has gone wrong. The first is an ACTH Stimulation test. I have already had the preliminary test done and it indicates that there might be some problem with my pituitary gland.
I knew that Prednisone had side effects - but no-one told me just how bad they could be.
Has anyone else had these type of problems?
