My doctor explained that epilem was once used to treat epileptic seizures. But it was found to have qualities that also helped to balance mood imbalances, and therefore is now used (as ltihium has been for the last 50 yrs) to treat patients with mood disorders such as bipolar (if you don't know what that is, it's a mood disorder which means the affected person has more noticeable ups & downs than people who are not affected - can be mild or extreme). Apparently the drug has been around for 30 years and is now increasingly being used for more mild cases, just to help the affected person be more grounded/stable.
