Over here, we find humour in sticking figurines on folks' lawns to let all the neighbours know that it's someone's birthday.
For example, when my Mum turned 65, I had the sign company go and stick 65 little piglets (cardboard, of course) onto her front lawn. She lives on a pretty busy street, so everyone that drove by through the day, honked and waved. I'm sure she could have cheerfully choked me, but I think she secretly enjoyed it.
That's how we knew it was Sailpappy's birthday, anyways. It's a North American thing, I guess.
