I got a nice e-mail from Gayle today, in response to an earlier post of mine. But immediately following that I got another one from her that looks like a virus diguised as an MPG I deleted it right away w/o writing down the name of it, but it was something like:
JINMY_HNDRX.MPG.pif
She probably got something mailed to her and opened it thinking it was a music file, but it only appears to be. When deciding what program to use to open a file, your computer only looks at the last . and the three letters that follow. So while this file has MPG in it, the computer reads that as a filename, not the extension. So this was actually a .pif file, and probably a virus. The reason I'm sharing this with you all is that the way these things work is when you open it, it automatically sends the virus to everyone in your address book, or "buddy list". Gayle probably has a few others at least on this board in her address book, so if ya get it, DON"T OPEN IT! Just delete it and then go to your "Deleted File" and delete it again from there. And just to be safe run your virus software. I know alot of you guys already know this stuff, but I also know that alot of you don't, so hope this learned ya somethin' Take Care!
