I’m a teacher in a school for kids with handicaps. Fortunately, I have an assistant that can cover for me while I suck up some O2 at my desk. I get a few strange looks from the kids and I just tell them I’m having a headache and I’ll be back with them in a few minutes. Without the O2, I would say that having a 60 minute CH in a room full of 4 and 5 year olds would be my version of hell :).
On another topic, when the class seems to be getting out of hand, fighting, calling each other names and throwing tantrums, we redirect them to a more positive activity. We give very little attention to the negative behavior as this just seems to reinforce it. The kids learn that throwing a tantrum doesn’t buy them anything and if we consistently ignore the tantrums they soon stop. We then show them a more positive way to get what they want and they learn that they are happier and it’s easier on them to try to get along with others. I don’t know what made me think of this :).
