His landlord turned him in to the fuzz. Doc is an incredibly warmhearted guy, but a little too trusting, I'm afraid.
Police found enough "cultivation equipment" to make it sensible for him to cop a plea. He has the additional misfortune to live in Arizona. Arizona is famous for their hardline judges. Bummer.
He does have a girlfriend, and the cops couldn't care less about clusterheads. Let's not forget that Doc Charlie is a mycologist by profession. He had dozens, maybe hundreds, of cultures of several different kinds of mushrooms in plain sight. The fact that many of them were perfectly legal varieties didn't cut much ice with the authorities. Some of the cultures were of the illegal variety, and the fact that he obviously had the knowledge to grow a bunch more led them to the conclusion that he WOULD grow a bunch more... hence he was a menace to the American way of life.
I have said before and I will say again that the cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms is illegal in the United States. If you choose to grow your own, be discreet about it. Don't let your landlord know what you're doing.
