I'm afraid I misspoke, REM sleep and slow wave sleep is not reached for an adequate amount of time for the body to "recover", with my apnea the majority of my sleep was in what is called stage 1 and stage 2 (a lighter stage of sleep, I'm just reading off my sleep study results, my sleep efficiency index was 69.2% and was considered sever and dangerous)and only briefly did I ever reach rem sleep. BTW apnea can occur at any stage sleep or even when in a very relaxed state (just dozing off for example)
