My neuro said exactly the same thing well over two years ago and flat out refused to give me oxygen so as long as I was a smoker. When I asked for his logic in denying me the best known abortive for cluster headaches, he stated that he had lost two patients in the past who had literally blown themselves up as a result of smoking while using O2. He, nor his malpractice insurance, were willing to take that risk again. As much as I loved my nicotine, I hated the pain more, so I quit smoking and went back for the script. Unfortunately, the O2 did not help me. In fact, it made my headaches worse. Please don't let this deter you though..my doc and I agree that I am a freak. If you ask me, it's worth a try. Smoking isn't doing your husband any good anyway..and the O2 could be his saving grace. Keep us updated.
