Apnea most definitely is not the cause of CH. But it is most likely a biological trigger for many of us. Hence the reason we get daytime clusters too.
Both CH and SA hit when you reach REM sleep and when they both occur there is a low-level blood-oxygen level.
You would get CH periodically and apnea all the time for the same reason that you can (although I know you don't) drink out of cycle but not in the cycle and not worry about an attack.
I have somewhere a lot of info on the two and the correlation. Unfortunately I must have saved that file under something obscure, like "Coffee: Man's best friend.doc," becaues I couldn't find it just now.
