I've had cycles where verapamil was effective fairly quickly after I started on it, but I felt a similar headache to what you described. It gradually subsided over a couple of weeks, and then was gone. I found that it responded well to plain old ibuprofen in the meantime.
One thing to check, though, is his pulse. Verap can knock it down into the 50's or even 40's for some folks, which can lead to weird aches too.
