An increasingly popular "recreational" drug of abuse, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy, ADAM) has caused widespread concern as a neurotoxin because of its ability to produce long-term depletion of 5-HT from neurons in rat and primate brains. Similar effects have been noted for several illegal analogs related to MDMA, such as the N-ethyl analog known as EVE.
