When I tell people I have cluster headaches, the most common response I get is: "Oh, are you having one right now?" I've had MANY people say this to me, including a therapist whom I'm seeing to deal with the anxiety these clusters are causing in my life. I am kind of at a loss for words when people say this. Any explanation on my part seems to fall so short of the reality of a cluster attack that it's laughable. How can I explain that I wouldn't be calmly having a conversation if I were in the middle of an actual attack? That my husband and I have to use sign language during an attack because any noise cuts through me like a knife. That the pain is so horrific that I've wanted to kill myself. It all starts sounding like a bid for sympathy.
