This is not unusual. By the time such medications
make it to the news, the following have to be accomplished:
Research (1-20 yrs)
Patent (1 yr - 2)
Development (2-5 yrs)
Toxicology (1 - ?)
Clinical I (3 months - ?)
Clinical II (? - ?)
Clinical III (? - ?)
Publication of findings from each of the above stages in
scientifically recognized journals for pier review.
Marketing
It could very well take 10 years (or more) of treating the
afflicted before the nightly news get a hold of
the miracle drug as a news-worthy story.
The best way of finding out early what is out there in the way
of novel approaches to disease management is to subscribe
to the specific area of research, development or
clinical specialty journal(s).
