These machines pass the room air through some naturally occurring mineral (I've forgotten its name), that absorbs most of the 78% nitrogen in the air, giving about 90 to 95% pure oxygen.
This less than 100% purity is less a disadvantage than the low (for us) flow rate. But most bothersome is the startup time of a few minutes. As we all know, it is of utmost importance to get to the oxygen as soon as possible, and a few minutes delay can result in a few notches up on the Kip scale. (For this reason, I use a 30 feet hose between the tank and the mask: I can make the necessary visit to the bathroom already hooked up to the oxygen.)
