Hi Stephanie,
I, too, am the wife of a sufferer and my hubby has also been prescribed percocet, fioronal (sp?), etc., etc., etc. You're right, these drugs are addictive and, in our case, were of little value in relieving his pain. We have found bigger relief (for a while) with Imitrex but he soon built up an immunity. This last cycle was horrific and the way we finally ended (he is episodic) was to consume large amounts of water (Dr. Jerry's Water Treatment), inhale pure oxygen at the onset of an attack and then take Gravol/Dramamine before bedtime to prevent the middle of the night monsters. For some reason the Gravol prevents you from going into the REM phase of sleep and therefore the CH doesn't hit....
Just some alternative suggestions for you and your husband but you should also keep trying to find a doctor with CH experience if you can. We are in Canada and this is tough for us to do. We also had to go on a lengthy waiting list to see a neuro (which we ultimately cancelled as the cycle had ended and hubby had had enough of the "lab rat" testing). The natural cures worked better for us.
Best of luck to you both and keep visiting this site. It, in itself, has provided the biggest relief for my husband EVER in his 20+ years of suffering. Thank God for DJ :) and his compassion to bring us all together.
Cheers
Margi
p.s. please feel free to e-mail me if you ever need a shoulder......it's tough being a supporter sometimes and I completely understand your frustration in trying to help your hubby.
