Our good friend Toon Rood from the Nederlandse Vereniging van Hoofdpijnpatienten has put a warning on the German CHMB that I thought worthwhile to pass on:
The combination of the antidepressive drug 'fluvoxamine maleate' (Luvox, Fevarin, Floxyfral) with sumatriptan (Imitrex, Imigran) can lead to severe, even fatal complications. There comes as yet no warning about this with Imitrex.
I've put fluvoxamine and sumatriptan into the drkoop.com Drugchecker
Here the results:
Severe Interaction Between Sumatriptan and Fluvoxamine Rare reports have described weakness, hyperreflexia, and incoordination following concomitant use of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and sumatriptan. Theoretically, the mechanism of the interaction between sumatriptan (which inhibits reuptake and degradation of serotonin 5-HT) and an SSRI is the excess potentiation of serotonin. Sumatriptan, however, is a selective 5-HT1D receptor agonist and has no activity at 5-HT2 or 5-HT3 receptors. If sumatriptan or any of the other 5-HT agonists is to be used with a SSRI, the patient should be observed for signs of increased serotonergic activity.
Probably, the same warning holds for the other triptans: Amerge, Zomig, Maxalt.
PFNAD's,
Ueli
