I'm in a long remission from this awful thing and sometimes when I read the stories (yours included) I break down. Mine started in 1969 and were episodic. I still live in fear the the things. Tell him to try a biofeedback technique I learned. It isn't a solution but it shortened my attacks: "think" or try to "fill" your arms and hands with blood drawn away from your head. It takes a LOT of concentration but anything that works is worth a try. Keep this up until things ease up. I was able to about halve the duration of the attacks with this.
